Dropcents recently caught up with Terrace of NGD Clothing to touch base on the ups and downs of the streetwear industry, inspiration, and what’s new for NGD Clothing. Keep reading to learn how this hip-hop head with a nostalgic appreciation for FUBU plans to make his stamp in the streetwear scene.
What label, brand, or company are you with? And what is your title?
NGD Clothing. I am the owner
What kind of products does NGD Clothing specialize in?
We specialize in T-shirts, Tank Tops, hoodies, and crew necks. Also
we plan to start producing snapback’s by summer of 2013
How did you get into this business?
I’m actually an art student at Arizona State University; so I’ve
always had an artistic side to me. But i actually got into clothing by
a friend of mine who also owns a clothing line called S.O.S Clothing.
I had some designs i had made and wondered if they would be good
enough to put on a t-shirt. So i called my friend and asked him if we
meet to talk. So we actually meet at my girlfriends house and he let
me know how to go about getting t-shirts made and everything like
that. And since then i been making clothing.
When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When i was younger i always thought i was gonna be in the NBA.
Where do you get your inspiration for NGD Clothing designs?
What kind of thought process goes into your collection?
My inspiration comes mostly from hiphop music. Hearing guys like j
Cole, Kendrick Lamar, wale or Meek Millz always gives me that drive
and inspiration to get some designs done. And when i get that
inspiration i just keep working till i get done with that particular
design(s) and it gets made. My thought process always come from the
thinking of what i like to wear. I always think to myself “would i
wear this” and go from there until i come up with a final design.
How do you fell about “Brand Jacking” where a brand mimics the
designs of another brand?
I think it’s pure laziness. A person taking someone else’s creative
idea and trying to profit off of there hard work is lazy and low down.
If someone wants to make it they need to realize it takes hard work
and dedication; and not be lazy and take the easy way out. people need
to sit down and think of designs themselves instead of trying to jack
someone else’s creativity.
How did you come up with the name NGD Clothing? What does it mean
or stand for?
Well NGD Clothing stands for Nerdy Graphic Design Clothing. And it
came from my personalty. I’m kind of a nerdy guy and i like to design
and i like clothing. so i just put everything together and came up
with NGD Clothing
With the explosion of social media, what is NGD Clothing doing to build
brand exposure? What social network is most important to your brand?
we just advertise NGD Clothing on all social networks as much as possible. Talk to
people who ask questions about the brand and just continue to make
every possible person aware of our wear. We use twitter the most to
advertise and socialize about NGD Clothing.
What is one style from the past that you wish was still popular?
i cant really say a particular style but i can say a particular
brand. And that brand is FUBU. I used to wear so much FUBU back in the
day that is was the only brand i had in my closet lol.
What is a current trend that you cannot stand?
YOLO. I’m sick of hearing YOLO
Snapback or Fitted? Why?
fitted. I have a wall in my room full of nothing but different fitted
hats. one to wear with every shoe i have.
Low tops or High Tops? Why?
High tops. Just looks better on my foot. Low tops is coo too put a
high top always gives me a better look.
What are your thoughts on todays street wear scene?
I like today’s street wear scene. With everyone wearing graphic tee’s
so much today you get to see a lot of different designs and styles.
And it’s always nice to see so many different artistic designs.
What do you see for the future of this industry?
I see it to continue to grow. You have a lot of young, different
designers and brands out there. So I think because of that this
industry is just going to grow and get bigger.
What is one of the best things about being in this industry?
I get to get my creative ideas out for other people to see. I’m not
restricted to making only a certain type or style of designs. I’m able
to make all different kinds of designs; So everyone out there gets to
see my creativity for themselves
What is one of the worst things about this industry?
Too many jackers out there. Because of the growth of this industry you
have a lot of people who want to be apart of it. And because of that
it also attracts those who want to get rich quick. So all they do is
just steal other peoples designs and not put any hard work in for
themselves.
How would you quickly describe your past 5 years in one short
sentence.?
These past five years for me have been challenging.
How long is your average work day?
10 hours
How many core members/employees are on your team?

industry?
Bobby Fresh and Rock Smith
If you had to give up your brand today and go work for a fast food
joint, which fast food joint would it be?
Culver’s
What was your first job?
As an Air Conditioning apprentice.
What will see coming from your brand in the future?
You’ll see continue growth. NGD Clothing plans to continue to grow
and spread the word about our wear. We want people to know who we are
and want them to know that we have a clothing line worth buying
