Medium Apparel

We had a chance to sit down with Zac from Medium Apparel and asked him a few questions about his line.

What label, brand, or company are you with? And what is your title.

I am from Medium Apparel. I am one of the Owners and the Creative director.

What kind of products does Medium Apparel specialize in?

Premium Street and Skate Apparel and Accessories

How did you get into this business?

I credit my success to Aleesha Smalls and Rocawear clothing. In 2010 I won a contest as Rocawear’s ‘Next’ Visual Artist. I flew out to New York, met the Rocawear family, did a photo shoot, the whole 9. After that experience I was hooked! I knew what I want to do in life and who better to open the door.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a solider, which I accomplished. I served 5 years in the US Army.

What inspires the designs behind Medium Apparel? What kind of thought process goes into your collection?

We draw inspiration from the streets; hip hop, street art, skating, and life.

How do you guys at Medium Apparel feel about “Brand Jacking” where a brand mimics the designs of another brand?

I personally think it is for the weak. Build your own identity, create your own boundaries and set standards that others want to jack.

How did you come up with the name Medium Apparel? What does it mean or stand for?

Medium Apparel was one of the first ideas that came to my head when I started rough sketches in my office. So many people make jokes, like haha I’m a large but that just shows peoples ignorance to thinking a word can only have one meaning. A medium is the material or technique with which an artist works with. A painter uses canvas, a DJ uses turntables, we use fashion.

With the explosion of social media, what does Medium Apparel do to build brand exposure? What social network is most important to your brand?

Here at Medium Apparel we are all about social media, you have to be in today’s world. We use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram equally to spread the word but I think Instagram is my favorite because I can bring people into the world of Medium Apparel visually!

What is one style from the past that you wish was still popular?

Guys wearing guys jeans…

What is a current trend that you cannot stand?

Guys wearing jeans so tight they look like spandex. On to the next trend please…

Snapback or Fitted? Why?

Personally, I’m a fitted guy and always will be.

Low tops or High Tops? Why?

Depends on the outfit, but your shoe game has to be top notch. High top, Low top doesn’t matter to me but I have to have clean kicks.

What are your thoughts on todays street wear scene?

I love it, the styles are so unique. One brand will be all over native prints while another brand might be for sneaker heads. Todays street wear brands are a product of the generation that grew up listening to all kinds of music, hanging out with all kinds of different people and not trying to fit into a category!

What do you see for the future of this industry?

I hope to see it continue to grow. 5 years ago people didn’t go out and start their own clothing brands because you needed a huge backer, but now a days it is grass roots movement. Companies doing it all and I want us all to succeed.

What is one of the best things about being in this industry?

The people we meet and hearing people get stoked about Medium Apparel!

What is one of the worst things about this industry?

For Medium Apparel it’s breaking into the industry. It is still real hush hush and secretive.

How would you quickly describe your past 5 years in one short sentence.

The start of a dynasty.

What is the average work day of  a Medium Apparel employee?

10 hours!

How many core members/employees are apart of Medium Apparel?

As of right now Medium Apparel has 3 employees but a core of family and friends that help us to no end.

What sneakers did you rock as a kid?

Velcros son! Strap ’em and tap ’em. Haha I’ve been a huge Nike fan my whole life!

What brand names were you rocking back in the day?

I remember wearing T&C Surf, Vision Street Wear, Stussy and Mossimo (back when Mossimo wasn’t a Target brand).

In your opinion, what other brands are on the come-up in this industry?

Our homies in Racks and Stacks and Foul Play are doing great things! I’m a fan of Breezy Excursion and Booger Kids, those guys are doing it right!

If you had to give up Medium Apperal today and go work for a fast food joint, which fast food joint would it be?

Subway, so I could become a sandwich artist!

What was your first job?

A bagger at a grocery store.

What will we see coming from Medium Apparels in the future?

Continued growth! The future is vast and we want to continue to expand.

What trends will be big in 2013 / 2014?

Lets bring guy jeans back, who is with me? But really, todays trendsshift and change so quickly sometimes they don’t even last a season so it ‘s hard to say! ~Medium Apparel
