Pittsburgh Rapper Wiz Khalifa released his eighth independently produced mix tape, “Kush & OJ” and it immediately shot to No. 1 on Google and Twitter. So much for the power of the record deal.
Khalifa (which means successor in Arabic) parted ways Warner Brothers in 2009 after they repeatedly delayed the release of his first album “First Flight.” He turned to the internet, using tools like youtube & Ustream to propel his career instead of relying on a major label. He released his second album “Deal or No Deal” independently last year, and had AT LEAST much, if not more success than he experienced with the label. Now, he drops a mixtape that hits No. 1 out the gate! I’m thinking ditching the label may have been the right decision. Kush and Orange Juice is available through a link on his Twitter page. It is also a sponsored mixtape on Datpiff.com. Here’s a sample for now.
