Sgrizzly Clothing
brand has been setting the cyber world a blaze lately popping up all over the place so we caught up with owner Bryce to learn a little more about the identity of Sgrizzly Clothing and how they plan to use bears, bows and arrows to “Keep Neighborhood Order”.
What is the idea behind your brand name?
Ah man tough one there… With a lot of back and forth let’s just say I always dug the name Grizzly and it had to be 7 letters, the S stands for a few things, I’ll just leave it at that for now. Some people pronounce it as one word but I’m cool with that.
What is idea behind your logo? Tell us the significance of the bear and arrows.
Don’t get me wrong – Sgrizzly Clothing is street but feeling a bit earthy at times and life is contrast and can cross over. The bear gives it that feel. That’s part of how the name came about as well. The bear lives and runs its own domain… I don’t want to take it too deep but the bear represents independence. The Arrows, I just thought that they look good, aesthetics wise and fit well.
Is “Original NY 1&1” a reference to anything?
My original street I used to live on in NY for the last 12 years, my old stompin’ ground – it will never leave me. A bit sentimental but that is where it all originally started. Where Sgrizzly Clothing felt at home and felt most real.
How does Sgrizzly Clothing “Keep Neighborhood Order”?
Well that’s a reference on taking control of life and discipline in general and being proud of where you live. I was always being told I would never leave my 5 block radius just going out and kickin’ it and what not ….and as sort of a joke my good friend Thomas would say he’s keeping neighborhood order. It just stuck and I feel if you try to keep things relevant to your life it just flows and it tied in naturally.
When did Sgrizzly Clothing launch?
Started in ‘09 and officially launched summer of ‘11
Who is Sgrizzly Clothing made for? Who is your target consumer?
It’s made for individuals really. I see people in the city NY that have a bit of a cross culture feel and they seem more of an individual to me, you can almost understand a little bit about them. Those people inspire me. The hybrid sub culture if you will and that is what I really dig about the city. No rules, Sgrizzly Clothing is for whoever is feeling it.
As a fresh youngster what lines did you rock back in the day?
I liked checking out underground brands, frequenting small shops in Soho like Union when they first opened, hitting up Alife , Memes, and Stack house which is no longer around. I had some dope one offs from Left Field when they were doing printed stuff and 10 deep had some clean designs back then. Had some vintage stuff as well. I was always on the hunt for the one off design and had that little simple or subtle concept that had something about it that made it fresh.
What did you want to be when you were a kid? Did you ever think you would be in the clothing and fashion industry?
Not when I was a teenager – I was to busy skating, hitting up clubs in South Beach and checking in on the wave forecast. Until I meet this girl that was going to law school and made be start to think about what I wanted to do. I went to a film school – actually did well and then went off to NY were I began assisting Fashion photographers, traveling and taking a few photos of my own. I started thinking about doing a clothing line when I was 18 or 19 but never serious about it but always hovering in back of my mind.
How did Sgrizzly Clothing get involved in the industry?
The photo industry and being around fashion heads all day everyday and always looking for the classic sneaker and was a bit obsessed with keeping them clean. I always wanted gear that no one else would have, something dope and hard to find.
What brands are you influenced by?
I can’t really say any specific brand or brands but do get influenced by pieces here and there that have a simple feel. Just looking at my environment – from old books to writing on the walls. Also pictures or images from time to time and old artwork, signs. Sgrizzly Clothing respects a bunch of brands and there a lot of dope stuff out there and find some of the ambiguous stuff inspiring.
We know that music also heavily influences the Sgrizzly Clothing brand, what music/artist
Would say have influenced Sgrizzly Clothing brands newest offerings?
Music can really inspire people – me as well and it can shape a person’s style in a sense. Well the new offerings are more premium fit and have a clean design – I think it will appeal to anyone representing creativity really. One design specifically was influenced by a classic hip-hop song.
What kinds of merchandise is Sgrizzly Clothing selling best right now?
Next for Sgrizzly Clothing is long sleeve, pocket tees, and hats seem to being showing the most love but got a bunch of new stuff coming in the next week or so and feel good about them being well received.
What is the most rewarding or exciting part of owning and running Sgrizzly clothing brand?
New finished designs are always exciting to see the end result and rewarding when people are showing interest and buying the goods is the ultimate compliment.
What is the most difficult aspect of it?
Getting production down and quality control. It’s all hands on now and I like to watch each piece. I have not fully marketed the brand yet but will see how it goes. I am wearing many hats at the moment.
Describe to use your average day, give us some insight into the Sgrizzly Clothing lifestyle.
Check the surf report, maybe go for a surf. I don’t really consider myself a surfer – just a city guy that happens to surf. I surfed my entire life and in NYC no one really knew…. Check email check orders. Write down ideas, listen to music start designing and throw them in the archives. Take photos, make phone calls, pick up, ship, and drink heaps of coffee.
How do you come up with the ideas and concepts for Sgrizzly clothing designs?
I’ll be brief on this one… Concept wise digging deep into things I like and blending ideas into one simple concept without overkill and keeping things classic. Street art, old photos, music, skating, and so on… I sometimes visually accessorize them to see how they fit into other looks.
With so many brands and labels out there, how does Sgrizzly Clothing set itself apart?
Ah man so many I didn’t even realized until I started to really look at other brands. Not just pumping out graphics but actually thinking about it. Sgrizzly Clothing pays close attention to each design individually and what it offers specifically by making sure it stands on it own right as one piece. Quality wise a lot of research on the best-cut, weight, color and overall quality. Each design holds it own so to speak, which creates the identity.
What can we expect to see from you guys this next year or two?
Well Sgrizzly Clothing has been getting great response so far and would like see more success but not by mass-producing products. It was never something I was into anyway. Some brands keep it limited and up price their clothing, Sgrizzly likes to keep things affordable and still maintain the value and integrity of the brand. Sgrizzly Clothing is looking into more cut and sew items. Plans of expansion but only time will tell – hopefully representing on an international scale…. Thanks for the interview fellas – keep checking us out – Sgrizzly clothing definitely has something you like.
